Ballistic Soap

Our calibrated Ballistic Soap offers a convenient and ready-to-use solution for assessing the penetration and damage caused by projectiles, such as pistol or rifle rounds. Unlike Ballistic Gel, this product expands upon impact, leaving the temporary cavity intact for further analysis. This unique feature allows users to compare different ammunition types over various ranges and gain valuable insights into their performance.

USAGE

To examine the temporary cavity created by the projectile, simply cut open the block in the direction of the wound. This will reveal the cavity and provide a visual representation of the projectile's impact. Additionally, for more detailed analysis, our casting powder mixture can be used to fill the cavity and create a cast of the wound. This allows for precise weight and volume comparisons, aiding in the evaluation of ammunition effectiveness.

For larger calibre projectiles, multiple blocks can be placed back-to-back, ensuring they are touching. This setup allows the projectile to travel through a longer path within the Ballistic Soap, providing a more comprehensive understanding of its behaviour and potential damage.

Ballistic Soap offers a practical and versatile solution for professionals in various fields, including law enforcement, forensic science, and firearm development. Its ability to preserve the temporary cavity and facilitate further analysis sets it apart from traditional Ballistic Gel, making it a valuable tool for studying terminal ballistics and improving projectile performance.

To ensure the stability and protection of the block during testing, it is recommended to use a single-use stand, foam, or cardboard as a supportive surface. These materials provide a stable base for the expanding block and help prevent any potential damage to the underlying surface.

By using a suitable stand or support, you can safely conduct your penetration and fracture analysis without compromising the integrity of the Ballistic Soap block or risking damage to the testing environment.

WARNING

During use, the Ballistic Soap block undergoes rapid expansion to simulate the formation of a temporary cavity. It is important to handle the block with care and avoid placing it on fragile or brittle surfaces that could potentially become damaged.

STORAGE

To maintain the quality and integrity of our Ballistic Soap, we package it in a waterproof and airtight bucket. This packaging is designed to protect the soap from high moisture levels and prevent dehydration during transit or storage. By keeping the soap in a controlled environment, we ensure that it remains in optimal condition for accurate and reliable testing.

It is important to note that exposing the Ballistic Soap to temperatures below 3°C (37°F) for prolonged periods of time can cause the product to "sweat." This sweating phenomenon occurs when the soap absorbs moisture from the air, leading to changes in its consistency and potentially affecting its performance. To prevent this, it is recommended to store the Ballistic Soap in a cool and dry location, away from extreme temperatures.

By following these storage guidelines, you can ensure that your Ballistic Soap maintains its quality and effectiveness over time. This will allow you to consistently obtain accurate results in your penetration and fracture analysis, providing valuable insights for your testing and research needs.

REUSABILITY

Our ballistic soap offers the advantage of being reusable, allowing for multiple tests and analyses. To prepare the soap for reuse, follow these simple steps:

1. Remove Projectile and Debris: Cut out any projectiles or fragments present in the wound track of the soap block. Ensure that the surface of the block is free from any dirt or debris.

2. Cut into Smaller Chunks: Cut the soap block into smaller chunks. This will facilitate the melting process and ensure even distribution of heat.

3. Heat the Soap: Place the soap chunks into a waterproof container with a lid. The container can be heated on a stove, in an oven, or even in a microwave for smaller blocks. Heat the soap slowly until it reaches a temperature of around 60°C (140°F). Stir the soap occasionally during the heating process to ensure uniform melting.

4. Pour into a Mould: Once the soap has completely melted and is homogeneous, it is ready to be poured into a mould for casting. If necessary, add 1% of water by weight to replace any water lost during the heating process. This will help maintain the desired consistency of the soap.

5. Allow to Cool: Place the mould containing the poured soap in a safe and cool location. Leave it overnight to allow the soap to solidify and regain its original form.

After following these steps, your ballistic soap block will be ready to use again for further penetration and fracture analysis. This reusability feature not only saves costs but also ensures consistent and reliable results in subsequent tests.

Please note that safety precautions should be taken when handling hot soap or using heating appliances. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and exercise caution to prevent any accidents or injuries.

Note: The calibration of this product will deteriorate after each remould.
